Vietnamese are one of the largest non-Khmer ethnic groups in Cam­bodia. According to government figures, Cambodia is host to around 100,000 Vietnamese. Unofficial observers claim that the real figure may be more like half a million. There is a great deal of dislike and distrust between the Cambodians and the Vietnamese, even among those who have been living in Cambodia for generations. For the Khmers, the Vietnamese migrants are always outsiders known as yuon (a derogatory term that means ‘barbarians’), while the Vietnamese consider the Khmers idle for not farming every available bit of land, an absolute necessity in densely population Vietnam.
