Despite Cambodia's tragic past, its wildlife is in reasonable shape. The years of war and suffering took their toll on some species, but others thrived in the remote jungles of the southwest and northeast. However, peace time has ironically brought more threats, with the logging industry carving up habitat and the illicit trade in wildlife discovering Cambodia and its exotic meats. Years of interruption mean scientists are only just beginning to effectively catalogue the country's plant and animal life, and several new species may await discovery.
